Town of East Fremantle Town Hall

The East Fremantle Town Hall was designed by architect Joseph F Allen and the foundation stone laid by Sir John Forrest in 1899.

The refurbishment project involved a thorough gutting and refurbishment of the interior, with the demolition work revealing the potential of the old building – its former high ceilings previously hidden by generations of office-style ceilings added in response to the evolving incorporation of air conditioning into the building.

SGK worked with Peter Hunt Architect to reclaim the high ceilings to the council chambers and gallery by utilising an underfloor air distribution air conditioning system. The design incorporates Variable Refrigerant Temperature (VRT) technology and fan coil unit bypass to limit the supply air temperature to around 19-20°C to minimise cold draughts within the occupied zone.

Summary of features of the mechanical services include:

  • Ducted VRV heat pump air conditioning (incorporating Daikin VRT technology) to the Council Chambers and Gallery,

  • VRV heat recovery air conditioning throughout, comprising ducted systems and ceiling cassette units to cellular offices,

  • Central controller with touch panel graphical interface,

  • Toilet exhaust and miscellaneous exhaust systems.
